I no longer maintain this list, I was once proud of my builds and setups. I sold off my nicer hardware and now have computers built from spare parts that serve their needs well. My main desktop is ~9 years old and, with upgrades, does all I need it to. Same for my workbench computer, used for wiping hard drives and transferring data. They are tested and reliable. I no longer need a high end computer for gaming or editing videos since the majority of my time is spent working on computers, not playing with them.

Certainly isn’t a replacement for my main computer but it’s a home away from home.

Home Server

This “Server” is merely a compilation of parts I’ve accumulated through the years. It’s basic specs are as follows:

You may have noticed that I did not list peripherals. The reason for this is two-fold: I do not need them and this computer is a project of mine, of which the goal is to make a green computer. To me, a green computer must be RoHS compliant and use as little power necessary. To achieve low power consumption I have disabled/removed the following items: Monitor, Sound, Keyboard, Mouse, Floppy Drive and CD Drive. I have gotten rid of the peripherals by controlling the computer with Remote Desktop Connection, so unless I’m doing physical work on the computer, I never need to hook it up to a monitor.

Network Equipment

Most people seem to be surprised at the fact that I’m technically on wireless internet. In fact, with such low pings around the country, even I’m amazed. My internet starts off with my ISP: First Step Internet. I get 4Mbps down and 1Mbps up. This is transmitted via a Point-to-multipoint wireless system that uses 2.4Ghz service. Due to a recent deal with First Step, I’m hosting a collocation tower (fancy repeater) and in turn, I get free internet with better reception due to them mounting antennas high up on a pole. From there it goes into my router which is a Linksys WRT310N modded with DD-WRT firmware (DD-WRT v24-sp2 std-nokaid-small – build 14929 NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko). I have a 8-Port Gigabit switch connected to the router for all computers in the house, this keeps high speed network transfers off the router itself except for my workbench. All ethernet cable is CAT6.
